How Can You Tell it’s Time to Replace Your Battery?

Most car owners don’t think too much about their car’s battery. L&D Automotive knows how that goes. You get busy and don’t notice that there’s an issue until there’s a big issue. Here are a few of the subtle and obvious signs that there’s something wrong with your car’s battery and that it’s time to replace it.

The Terminals Are Corroded

Most car manufacturers recommend that you visually inspect your battery fairly regularly. It’s a good idea to look at it at least once a month. Check the terminals, where the battery cables attach. If you see a white, powdery residue, that’s battery corrosion and might mean that your battery is having trouble.

The Case Is Bulging or Cracked

Another thing to look at when you visually inspect your car’s battery is the case itself. It should be squared up along all six sides. If you’re seeing bulging areas, that’s a sign that there’s something going on inside the battery. A crack in the case is even worse because that means battery acid is likely to leak.

Your Lights Are Getting Dimmer

When you turn on your lights, do they seem a little dimmer than usual? If so, that could be due to a weak battery. Turn on your brights if you’re not sure you can tell a difference. If they’re noticeably dimmer, that means it’s time to have your battery tested.

You’ve Got a Warning Light on the Dashboard

It’s also really important to pay attention to the dashboard warning lights that you might see. Double check your car’s owner’s manual for detailed information about what each light means. Some cars use a small image of a battery, while others might use letters, like GEN or ALT when there’s trouble with the battery or alternator.

The Battery Is Old

It’s important to have at least a general idea how old your battery is. They do have a limited lifespan, usually around three to four years. If you know your battery is older than that, it’s likely on borrowed time as it is and you should get it replaced as soon as possible.

If you’re not sure whether your battery is okay or not, we can help. L&D Automotive in Lavon, TX is happy to test your battery for you and make sure that other parts of the electrical system are working well, too. That way you’ve got a full solution to your issue.
