Does Your Car Have an Exhaust Leak?

Exhaust leaks are a big problem that you don’t want to let go on for too long. L&D Automotive has some tips that can help you to spot an exhaust leak quickly so that you can get help for your car.

You Hear the Leak or Just More Engine Noise

Your car’s exhaust system does a few things, including keeping combusted fuel and air out of the engine itself. But it also helps to reduce engine noise, which is significant. If you’re hearing a lot more engine noise than usual, that can mean that there’s something going on with your exhaust system. The leak might be in the muffler itself, or it could be somewhere else in the exhaust. Depending on where that leak might be, though, you could actually hear the leak. If you suspect that you’re hearing something that is an exhaust leak, don’t discount that feeling because you could very well be right.

You Smell Gas Inside the Car

There are a few things that are seriously bad news for you and your car, and one of those is if you’re smelling gasoline fumes inside the car while you’re driving. This can happen if there’s too much gas getting into the combustion chamber of your car’s engine and it isn’t all burning off. A leak in the exhaust system then means that unburned fuel is flowing through the exhaust and can get into the passenger area. If you are ever smelling gas inside your car, you really should not drive the car.

Your Car Has Terrible Gas Mileage

Your car’s gas mileage is one of many ways that your car tries to let you know that there’s a problem. In the case of an exhaust leak, what’s happening is the car’s engine is having to work a lot harder. The fuel that’s getting into the engine is not burning efficiently, and the car’s computer might try to compensate by changing the fuel to air mixture, sending even more fuel into the engine. But that doesn’t help and only burns more gas without giving you any sort of payout for that extra burn. And you see that as poor gas mileage on your end.
