Why Is My Car Shaking At Low Speeds

Imagine this, one day, you are driving, and everything is fine. You see a red light and start to slow down. Once you slow to a certain speed, your vehicle starts to shake, almost as if you have a flat tire. You pull off into a parking lot to look at your tires, but to your surprise, the tires are fully inflated. What could be causing this wobble you feel when driving at low speeds? Read more to find out some possible causes.

Unbalanced Wheels

One reason your vehicle could be shaking while driving is an unbalanced set of wheels. When you get new tires, auto repair shops will test those tires on a wheel balancing machine. This machine will simulate driving at high speeds and determine the wobble you should expect. Then the mechanic will put counterweights on the tire to counter this natural wobble to help provide a smoother ride. Sometimes these weights fall off and can cause a wobble.

Over/Under Inflated Tires

Sometimes when you get your tires inflated, there runs the possibility of over-inflating or under-inflating your tires. If a tire is overinflated, the center of the tire will bulge out, causing an uneven driving experience. The opposite is for an underinflated tire. This will stimulate a flat tire on your vehicle since there is not enough air to keep the tire firm. Look for a sticker on the driver’s side door frame to find the proper pressure for your tires.

Dented Rim

Another common reason your vehicle might be shaking at certain speeds could be a dented rim. This is commonly mistaken for an issue with the wheel bearing of your vehicle since they both cause a weird noise at high speeds and wobble at low speeds. A dented rim could be caused by hitting a pothole, running off the road, or hitting an object. These are the hardest to fix because you have two options, take the rims to a shop to be repaired or buy new rims.

Make An Appointment

If the issue happens to be an unbalanced wheel or some over/under-inflated tires, those are simple fixes, but if it is a dented rim, you would want to get that fixed sooner than later to prevent further damage. Bring your vehicle into our shop today to get inspected if you are experiencing a wobble while driving.
