Radiator Leaks – What You Should Know

Many people are not too familiar with the different working systems in their vehicles. You have the AC system, the fuel system, the electrical system, and the cooling system – just to name a few. These systems all work independently but combine to make the whole system work. We are here today to inform you about the cooling system and answer the question: Why is my radiator leaking?

The Cooling System

How does this system work? The system comprises of a water pump, hoses, radiator, thermostat, and fan. The cooling process starts with the water pump, which constantly pumps coolant through the engine. This coolant is then passed through the radiator to be cooled by the air coming into the vehicle, with a little help from a fan, through the radiator grill. This cooled liquid it then sent back to the engine to help remove more heat. During this process, the thermostat is constantly checking the temperature of the coolant. Once it reaches a hot enough temperature, it is sent back to the radiator to be cooled. If everything is working properly, your engine will stay nice and cool and never overheat.

How The Engine Overheats

If one part of the cooling system stops working properly, your vehicle could overheat. A hose could wear over time and crack, causing the system to leak coolant. The thermostat could get stuck open and never pass the coolant into the radiator. The coolant could run low and, if not refilled, cause the radiator to heat up and crack. The water pump could fail and not pump the coolant throughout the system. All these scenarios could lead to overheating. To prevent this issue, getting your fluids checked regularly along with the cooling system’s components is essential. If you see any coolant on the floor after you drive away, bring it to a shop before anything overheats.

Make An Appointment

Bring your vehicle into our shop today to get your fluids checked and all the cooling system components inspected. It is better to know the condition of these parts than waiting until it is too late and something breaks. Call us, make an appointment, or stop by the shop today. We are happy to help.
