Why Don’t Brake Pads Always Wear Evenly?

It would be great if your car’s brake pads always wore down perfectly evenly, right? Unfortunately, there are a lot of different factors at play with that, and L&D Automotive has some insight for you into why that happens. There’s not just one answer at all.

Brake Pads May Not Be Perfectly Aligned

Even brand-new brake pads on a brand-new car could be misaligned. That can cause the individual brake pads to wear down a little unevenly. Over time, even if they are lined up perfectly right from the start, they can become misaligned as you’re driving. Wrecks and even road debris hitting the brakes can cause small issues with alignment that cause the pads to wear unevenly. They also will never wear perfectly evenly from one disc assembly to another.

Rotors Collect a Lot of Stuff

Your car’s brakes are actually pretty exposed, particularly to road debris. Corrosion is also an issue, particularly on rotors. If rotors become damaged at all, they can collect small amounts of gravel and other road junk that can cause brake pads to wear down unevenly. None of that is great for your car’s brakes.

Pressure Can Vary

There are other variables too, and many of them affect how much pressure each brake pad receives. Blockages in different brake lines, changes in brake fluid levels, and even issues with the calipers can all cause problems with uneven pressure. That in turn can affect how evenly and how well the brake pads wear as you use your brakes. Most of the time that’s something that you don’t have visibility to until you’re getting your brakes inspected.

Brake Pads Don’t Leave the Factory Perfect

As bizarre as it sounds, your car’s parts don’t leave the factory in perfect condition. Sometimes brake pad manufacturers have issues during production and you end up with brake pads that are weaker in some spots or that are uneven from the get go. None of that is under your control, of course, and it impacts how well the brake pads wear.
